In our film Psychosis the main character Jennifer tries to fit the stereotype of a typical teenage girl on the outside through the way she presents herself. However, on the inside she is a vulnerable and sensitive person. To present this to the audience we used a diegetic ticking clock sound to suggest that time is running out and something bad is about to happen and an extreme high angle right at the beginning of the clip to show her vulnerability.
We used low key lighting to set the scene to create a moody atmosphere and introduce a dark feeling to the clip as Jennifer has she just been startled awake.
Amanda (Jennifer’s sister) is a mature and mother-type figure to Jennifer as their mother is mostly absent all day at work. She fits the female stereotype with her simple clothing which is a white blouse and black jeans. She takes care of domestic duties such as cooking ironing and makes sure Jennifer is alright.
During the conversation scene between Jennifer and Amanda, it is noticeable that they are barely ever in shot together. We did this to show the audience that while Amanda cares a lot about Jennifer, they are both separate people and Jennifer prefers to isolate herself from the people who care about her.
The antagonistic character, Eddin Rowark (the person who pursues Jennifer in the woods) is dressed in a stereotypical way to imply danger and distress. He is dressed in all black clothes with a dark face which connotes mystery and gives the feeling of an uneasy atmosphere.
We used a low angle to highlight Rowark’s empowerment of Jennifer and to show the danger he possesses. Low key lighting is used to create a dark mood and atmosphere.
