Evaluation- Question 1

Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our film psychosis is a Psychological Horror, the part of horror that feels realistic, as it features the work of humans, either that have mental disorders or that are stranded in exceptional situations. Often linked with the thriller genre, these types of films build most of their horror around psychological tension. One of the main codes and conventions that represent the genre in our film is setting. We had 2 main settings for our film: The main characters home & the woods. We filmed in the woods close to one of our character’s houses; we filmed in a house to make Psychosis more realistic and to make the audience be able to relate to the characters.

Filming in the woods gave psychosis a scary feel and gave us natural low key lighting to add to the horror. For example, The Blair Witch project was filmed in the woods and gave the film a unique selling point, similar to our film.

The editing in Psychosis was mainly fast pace, explaining that our main character Jennifer’s life is somewhat a panic and she doesn’t have structure in her life. We used a tracking shot in the beginning of our film to make the audience feel as if they are with Jennifer and so they can relate to her character. In the film we also included non diegetic music that is down beat and minor key, adding tension to the film and making the audience feel nervous as to what is going to happen next. One of the codes and conventions is costume and makeup. In our film the main character wears minimal makeup to insinuate that she doesn’t want to attract much attention. However in the ending the ‘Mysterious figure’ wears dark makeup on the skin shown to give them a     z  In addition to this, our main character Jennifer wears mostly black clothing; this could suggest that her character is in absence of colour. It could also suggest that Jennifer doesn’t want to attract any attention to herself and doesn’t want colour in her life, relating to her mental health issues. One character that dresses similar (dark clothing) to our main character is Mila Kunis in Black Swan, also a psychological horror. The characters both dress this way to represent their emotions.
